Business Development Forum,
a Panel Discussion,
"Starting a Ceramics Business"

Business Development Panel

Panel Members: (l.-r.) Mark Parish, Les Bowen, Ted Lilley (moderator), Bill Rhodes, Ron Chand

WESTBOROUGH, MA The New England Section held its first Business Development Forum on April 9, 2008. This forum, a panel discussion directed to the theme "Starting a Ceramics Business", was unique in the context of the section’s technical presentation-orientated meeting history. Given the excellent attendence, more than 40 attendees, and keen audience interest, April's business forum is likely to become an annual event. Audience questions related to technology transfer, small business initiatives and impact on personal life. They were addressed by a group of panelists including Drs. William H Rhodes (Rhodes Consulting), Les Bowen (President, MSI), Mark Parish (Director of Technology, Ceranova) and entrepreneur Ron Chand. The after dinner discussion was facilitated by Ted Lilley (Materials Technology). Each panel member was allocated a ten-minute presentation with topics of his choice and followed by an active Question and Answer session. Messages, advice and lessons from the panelists were well received by audience members who may want to pursue this goal at some point of their career.

Vendor's Night 2007, Another Smashing Success

The following information was provided by Jun Wang

David Pye

David Pye (left), President, American Ceramic Society, prepares to engage more than sixty attendees at the NEACerS' October 17 Vendor's Night and Technical Exposition. Helping in the set-up are Susan Munyon, Vendor's Night organizer and Adam Scotch, current NEACers President.

Jun writes:

Vendor’s Night 2007

The New England Section of the American Ceramic Society held its 13th Annual Vendor’s Night on October 17, 2007. The Vendor’s night has been one of the Section’s highest participation meetings since its inauguration and this year’s event further extended that streak. Registered vendors from the New England area took this opportunity to showcase their business strengths with table-top exhibits and booth spaces during the 2-hour forum prior to dinner. Each vendor took 3 minutes to introduce their company, its products and business opportunities. The evening’s feature presentation was delivered by Dr. L. David Pye, Dean and Professor Emeritus at Alfred University and the newly elected President of the American Ceramic Society. As ACerS President, he cheered the section’s past accomplishments and challenged the section to come up with a plan to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the society. A turnout of over 60 attendees enjoyed raffle prizes which included numerous gifts donated by the Section Corporate Sponsors and the Society. Active participation by the Section Corporate Sponsors contributed to a very fruitful meeting and the message from the President was well received.

Bob Sayre striking the "Chairman's Pose" as he presides over one of many meetings during his years of service to the Section.

Bob writes, "I transitioned out of “big law” to start my own patent prosecution practice in Kendall Square, Cambridge.  My new contact information is below.  I am still spending most of my time addressing the administrative matters of opening a new business, though I have fortunately thus far been able to sign as clients three solid companies/institutions with a substantial amount of work related to ceramics.  In the coming months/years, if you encounter businesses (particularly in the field of ceramics) with patent-related needs, I would appreciate any additional referrals."

BEST OF LUCK!!
